In continuation of my letter of even date,

I take this opportunity of drawing the Secretary of State's

attentiem to a very serious matter which has recently been

before the Court, which has an intimate connexion with

question which has already been the subject of much correspond-

the execution of Hongkong judgments in Canton. I do so

net with a view of reviving the question, but in order to keep

the Secretary of State informed of what is going on in the

Colony in connexion with it.

The facts are briefly these. A certain

Chinese firm trading in Hongkong went into bankruptcy; and paid

a very small dividend (34%). One of the creditors, Messrs.

Reuter Breckelmann and Company, a German Firm trading in the

Colony, did not prove in the bankruptcy, but having heard from

their compradore that certain Chinese in Canton were partners in

the Hongkong firm, set the German Consul-General in motion to

set the Chinese Authorities in motion in order to obtain a

settlement of their claim in full. In so doing they not only
